Three Days with Bobby Fischer & Other Essays - Alburt

Subtitle: How to Meet Champions and Choose Your Openings

Nearly everyone with an interest in chess shares the same two questions: What were the great champions like? How can I choose opening moves that give me a good game?

Chess Hall-of-Famer and three-time U.S. Champion Lev Alburt teams up with World Chess Hall of Fame Executive Director and Chess Journalist of the Year Award winner Al Lawrence to answer these questions and to tell the intriguing, inspiring and sometimes downright bizarre behind-the-scenes stories of the chess greats and near-greats, and how, above all else, they were men of their times.

Three Days with Bobby Fischer is largely based on the award-winning online monthly columns that appeared at ChessCafe

Action Chess - Purdy

This is where Purdy is different: he really understands the positions he discusses. Naturally, the passage of time has dated some of his analysis, but as you immerse yourself in the material contained in this book, you can’t help but conclude, as Petrosian wrote of Mikenas, that this guy hasn’t merely memorized the variations: they’re etched into his hide…What you have is a book of ideas…Some of the lines given in the French section are not to be found elsewhere. If you study them carefully and do some original thinking, you can be a real openings expert. I have made some corrections, offered some hints and guidelines, but rest assured that I have left much ground unplowed…Trust Purdy. He could, as the economist Frank Knight used to say, further your education. —from Master Ron Wieck’s Preface

The Book is fantastic. I own 100s of chess books and this def. makes the top 10. Maybe top for problem books. I finished the book. It predicted my rating to within about 30 points and I learned that I am much better at strategy than I had realized but much worse at calculation and tactics than I thought. So now I’m working my weaknesses and researching strategic openings.- Brian Karen (1800-2200), Admin @ Internet Chess Club (ICC)

A Parents Guide to Chess - Heisman

Chess offers many benefits to players of all ages. This book is intended as a guide to help parents explore this expanding world and to maximize its benefits for their children. Putting all this information in one place will, we hope, make your journey a lot easier.

It is a 153-page roadmap for parent’s to their child’s fascinating new hobby–chess. The good news from teachers and other parents: kids who play chess not only have a lot of fun, but they do better in school, learn self-reliance and develop lifelong analytical skills .

The questions will come fast and often sound like another language:

-What do you think of the Petroff Defense, Dad?
-What do I do with an isolated pawn, Mom?
-Where can I find other kids to play chess with?
-I’m ready for a chess coach–where can I find one?
-How can I play in a tournament to get an official rating?

Here are the basics to help any parent guide their child to get the most out of an occasionally confusing, but extremely rewarding opportunity. Parents can teach their children important skills while strengthening their relationship and sharing an activity that can serve as a life-long bond.

Chess Workbook for Children - Bardwick

It’s a wonderful kids chess workbook! Todd wrote this book just for kids, particular with attention to an easier vocabulary. Many basic chess books are seemingly written for adults - this one is wonderful for youth as young as 6 to 8 years old or as soon as they can read on their own.

At the end of each chapter there are ten easy problems and ten intermediate problems. Of course each chapter covers all the beginning elements starting with How the Pieces Move, Basic Openings, Keeping Scores, Basic Checkmates, etc.

Ten problems and ten intermediate problems at the end of each chapter reinforce what has just been taught. The answers are explained very clearly at the end of the book giving you detail as to why each move would be played.

  • chess rules and basic strategies
  • two hundred problems with comprehensive answer key at two skills levels: Basset Hound (beginner) and Chess Detective (Intermediate)
  • tried and true tested analogies that children will relate to so that they will learn chess in an effective and fun way
  • chess crossword puzzles and word searchces
  • chess quotes from famous people
  • fun and entertaining illustrations

This book stands aside Teaching Chess for the 21st Century as a perfect compliment. The Workbook for Children is ideal for the kids, while Teaching Chess for the 21st Century ideal for the chess club teacher.

Larger font - easier to read.
8×5″ x 11″ format
teaches algebraic style chess notation - easy to learn and read
